All Things Considered
A small business owner was involved in a car accident and could not work normal hours for approximately two months after the accident. The business owner alleged that the business income suffered as a result, and therefore submitted a lost income claim to the insurance company of the responsible motorist.

We reviewed the claim and the company’s financial records. We noticed that the claim was understated because it did not take into account the growth trend that the business was experiencing prior to the accident. In addition, we found that the claim did not include the cost of temporary labor used to help with the business while the owner was working a reduced schedule. Our calculations were used to settle the matter.
In Pursuit of Accuracy
An insured motorist ran into a dump truck causing substantial damage to the truck. The business which owned the truck claimed lost income for the time that the truck was out-of-service for repair.

We were hired to evaluate the lost income claim. We found that the lost income claim did not consider expense savings realized while the truck was not in use such as gasoline, maintenance and repairs. In addition, we noted that while the damaged truck was out-of-service, the company’s other trucks were used more than usual, in an effort to offset some the effect losing one truck. The company agreed with our calculations.
